Keep AEO Simple: Baseline, Measure, Create

A simple three-step AEO process for B2B teams: establish a baseline, measure performance with the right stack, and keep creating expert content.

A practical AEO process comes down to three actions: establish a baseline, measure consistently, and create useful content. You don't need to chase every platform or rewrite your marketing strategy around another acronym. You need to know where you stand and what deserves attention next.

GrowthHive connects that process to familiar marketing discipline. Understand your buyers, make your expertise clear, and review the evidence. More tools won't fix an unclear plan.

Step 1: Establish Your AEO Baseline

You cannot prove improvement if you do not know where you started.

AEOsearchIconAn AEO baseline records how your company appears in AI-generated answers before you make changes.  Use a tool such as HubSpot AEO Grader to capture an initial view of your AI-search readiness and visibility. Save the date, score, observations, and obvious gaps.

Then add the business context a score cannot supply.

Which offerings matter most? Which buyers are you trying to reach? Which competitors appear when those buyers research your category?

Check whether answers describe your capabilities accurately and reference relevant expertise. Record the questions and platforms you reviewed so later comparisons have context.

A score gives you a starting point. It cannot decide your priorities for you.

Step 2: Measure What Changes

Once the baseline is established, choose the platform you will use to monitor progress.

MeasureIconConsistent AEO measurement shows how visibility changes across the questions and answer engines you track. Choose a platform such as HubSpot or Semrush to track AI visibility, competitive performance, topic opportunities, and content recommendations. Check its coverage and use it consistently. The specific platform matters less than the discipline of using it consistently.

Build a monthly scorecard with separate lines for brand mentions and citations, competitor presence, identifiable AI referrals, and qualified inquiries. Keep your active-user trend alongside those indicators, but don't label all website growth as AI-driven.

Track the same indicators over time. Compare changes with the content and website work completed during that period.  Compare trends before deciding what worked; one better score does not establish what caused it.

AEO should become part of the marketing operating rhythm, not a separate experiment that disappears after a few weeks.

Step 3: Create Content Worth Finding

Useful AEO content answers real buyer questions with specific expertise.

Your engineers know why a component fails. Your sales team knows which objections delay a decision.

Turn that knowledge into something buyers can evaluate.

CreateFor example, a manufacturer could explain which operating conditions affect material selection, where a process has limitations, or how a verified application solved a customer problem. Publish the conditions and evidence, not another unsupported “high quality” claim.

Use application guides, product pages, FAQs, and documented results where they fit. As our "AEO Without the Hype" blog explains, the buyer journey is changing. A prospect researching a process, product, supplier, or technical problem may now begin with an AI-generated answer instead of clicking through ten blue links. But the fundamentals remain.

That can compress the research process and change where a brand earns visibility. Keep SEO working. Clear headings help readers; they don't replace substance or guarantee a citation.

Build Your AEO Scorecard. Then Repeat.

Professional AEO tools can accelerate the process by identifying gaps, suggesting topics, comparing competitors, and drafting content structures. That does not eliminate human judgment. It gives marketers a faster way to decide where effort should go. Subject-matter expertise, brand voice, commercial priorities, and technical accuracy still need human ownership.

A monthly review keeps the process accountable: check your indicators, review completed work, and choose the next improvement. Assign an owner and a review date. Make measurement part of the operating rhythm rather than a report nobody revisits.

Build Your AEO Scorecard. Request a meeting with GrowthHive to discuss your baseline and measurement priorities. Know where you stand before deciding what comes next.
